How to Save Money When Insuring Teen Drivers

Fuzzy diceDo you have a teen child that needs to be added to your policy? Here are some tips to help you keep your car insurance rates as low as possible. It is widely known that teens are more expensive to insure. And for good reason too. They are a higher risk to insurance companies, but there are some things you can do to minimize those costs. First, encourage your teen to drive a moderate sedan rather than a sporty, convertible one.  The more safety features it has, the better! It's better to stay off of any police department's radar this way.

One tip that helps many parents when getting a car insurance for their teen is to have your insurance company assign the teen to one car, and preferably a more affordable, conservative car, so that they don’t have the risk associated with teens on more than one car in a household. You can even enroll your teen in a driver’s safety course. This will help to reduce your insurance rates as well as helping your teen learn good driving habits that will aid their safety.  Some companies offer good student discounts; when your teen does well in school, they can help qualify for these additional discounts.  An average of B or higher is great for this!

Another, although less popular, way to reduce the rates given on a car quote is to go for a higher deductible.  Make sure it’s one you can afford since teens are more likely to have an accident.  This is especially helpful if your teen will be driving in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Akron, or Toledo, the state’s top 5 most populated areas, where there are likely to be one-way streets, not to mention heavier traffic and pedestrians than in other areas of the state.

Discuss cellphones with your teen. Emphasize the need to avoid talking or texting on cell phones while driving. Even though many people do it, teens are especially in danger for an accident because of their inexperience with handling a vehicle.  Texting and driving is a bad idea for anyone who drives, adults included. These save habits prevent accidents, which keeps the rates from going up. You could find yourself shopping for another Cleveland car insurance quote if your teen gets into accidents.  Keep the rates down by shopping around and keeping your teen safe.
