How to Protect against Unisured and Underinsured Drivers

Uninsured and underinsured coverages can sometimes be confusing to people. There is a high probability that there are some uninsured and underinsured motorists among the 11.5 million residents in the Buckeye state.  Unfortunately, even with the risk of criminality, it’s what people do. Experts say that the number of uninsured or underinsured drivers in any given part of the country may go as high as 25%! With a number as high as this, it makes sense to want to protect yourself.  So let us discuss the differences between underinsured and uninsured insurance.

Car AccidentUnderinsured coverage in an auto policy refers to a driver who has the state minimum coverage, but does not have enough coverage to cover the costs associated with an accident.  If the at fault driver does have insurance, it's possible his coverage limits aren't high enough to cover the damage to your car. Or enough to cover injuries from the accident. That's where underinsured insurance kicks in, picking up the difference. These days, it would be wise to purchase this coverage because of the high cost of health care. It can save your finances and sanity.  Knowing that you have this additional coverage can set your mind at ease.

Uninsured coverage in your auto policy is present for the motoristwho drives with no coverage at all.  This can also be someone whoselimits for coverage don’t meet the state minimums.  Ohio’s stateminimums are 12.5/25/7.5, which means $12,500 per person in oneincident, $25,000 per incident, and $7,500 in property damage.  Theseare the lowest limits that a person can purchase in the state of Ohio. As so many people purchase this coverage, it is prudent provide your ownuninsured motorist coverage. This will provide some extra protection ifyou have an accident with this type of motorist.

Having an accident with an underinsured or an uninsured driver can be very difficult on your health, finances, and vehicle.  You can rest easy when you know you’ve purchased Ohio car insurance with the additional coverage of uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.  This coverage is included with almost everyone’s policy, but many people do not know why.  It is a very important option to add to your auto policy. Then, if you are unlucky enough to have an accident, you will be able to handle it without the added worry of the expense.
