Detailing Your Inventory

It is important to have a detailed inventory for all of the items in your home. If you have antiques, heirlooms, or simply belongings that you cherish, proof of their existence is important when making an insurance claim. There are many different ways that you can catalog the items that you own. Regardless of which option you choose, it is important that you are as detailed as you can possibly be and that you keep the inventory information out of harm’s way at all times.

Video

One way that you can catalog your belongings is with a video recorder. You can walk around your home and take a video of everything that you own. In the video, it is important to show any tags, plaques, or identifying markers to prove that the items are the items you claim them to be. Antiques should be recorded from all angles to show their true condition. If you have an antique that is in wonderful condition and worth a lot of money, showing that it has no damage will allow you to get a higher assessment for it, if it were to get damaged or stolen.

Photo Albums

A photo album is a simple way to catalog your items. You can take pictures of everything in your home with a disposable or digital camera. A digital camera will allow you to have a timestamp on the pictures so that you can prove when they were taken, but if you do not have one, it shouldn’t be a huge issue. After you have the pictures developed, it is a good idea to store them in a single photo album so that they are easy to store and find when you need them. You may want to make double copies of the pictures so that you can keep a set for your own records and have a set to submit to your insurance company, if anything were to happen.

Email

The easiest and cheapest way to catalog your items is by taking pictures of everything with a cellphone and then emailing the pictures to your email account. The email account allows you to store the pictures in a safe place and access them whenever you choose. It is best to email the pictures to more than one account, just in case something happens to the first email account.

Storage

Regardless of how you catalog your items, you need to store the video or photo album in a safe place. It is best to buy a safety deposit box at a bank to use for storage. If you store either of them at your home, there is a possibility that they could be ruined if a flood, fire, or natural disaster occurs. Most safety deposit boxes are very affordable and a worthy investment to make.
